Panayam kay Sis. Mary John Mananzan

Pinuna ni Sis. Mary John ang aking tanong ukol sa kahalagahan ng pagtatanggol sa batayang karapatang pantao sa isang demokratikong lipunan tulad ng Pilipinas, sinagot niya ito ng isang retorikal na tanong:

"Demokratiko ba ang Pilipinas?

I believe that we don't have a democracy, I believe that we have democratic forms but we don't have democratic processes for a simple reason that we don't have a material base for it."

*democratic forms tulad ng eleksyon

Ayon kay Sis. Mary John Mananzan, ang pinakapayak na basehan sa isang "ipinapalagay" na demokratikong lipunan ay ang pagtamasa sa mga pangunahing pangangailangan ng nakararaming Pilipino. Ito ay sinusugan niya ng ilang patunay na hindi umiiral ang demokrasya sa Pilipinas:

• The assumption that we have co-equal branches as legislative, judiciary and executive. Is that true? No. Kontrolado ang Senado. Kontrolado ang Kongreso. Kontrolado ang judicial.
  
• Hindi demokratiko ang botohan: ipinagbibili at binibili lang!
• You cannot go to the government to defend your human rights. The government is the perpertrator of human rights violations, in general.
• Writ of Amparo, a very good law is not properly executed
  
• Cases filed against Jun Lozada and other witnesses who state the truth. Jun Lozada is forced to stay in a "sanctuary" for the protection of his life.
  
• Failure of the Ombudsman*
  
• EJK, journalistic Killings, political repression and enforced disappearances, among others.

Para sa isang aktibong nanindigan noong panahon ng EDSA People Power, kapanalig/lider ng GABRIELA at progresibong miyembro hindi lamang ng Simbahan, narito ang mga basehan/esensyal na elemento tungo sa pagkakamit ng tunay na KARAPATANG PANTAO:

• right to life
• right to liberty
• pursuit of happiness
• freedom of speech
  
• freedom of religion
  
• right of survival (good employment, right wage)

*Sis. Mary John signed the petition to impeach the Ombudsman, as she believes that latter fails to catch, what she calls "the big fishes" of corruption scandals (i.e. Joc Joc Bolante, Benjamin Abalos, FG despite of World Bank's confirmation that Mike Arroyo's name is included in its special list, etc.)

"EDSA 1 and 2 are not a failure.

Ang failure natin ay hindi natin
binantayan ang mga susunod."

The youth should vow. Usigin ang darating na eleksyon!
Binigyang-diin ni Sis. Mary John ang mahalagang papel ng kabataan upang bantayan ang susunod na liderato at umaksyon laban sa sistemang papabor sa mga kurakot.
