Papaya Generation Extended?

I remembered my entry regarding Papaya Generation. I was surprised to see that America imitates it.:)

The Art of Riding a Sidecar*

I can still remember the hottest issues that were stirring up both the air and television waves for two days, a coincidence may it seemed, but the headlines were stressing Sumilao farmers’ march to Malacanang for address of injustice and the president’s walk of unity -- shaking all by that same word of walking.

I haven’t seen you in a while, yet I often imagine riding with you.
I haven’t approached to you recently, but many times I hear your thoughts…

Sidecars, we used to see them along sidewalks. The people themselves are the chatters of the town. They talk, they listen, and they react absolutely to all issues regardless of their concerns. And from that very moment, they are strained to walk even without external dialogue with each other. For that, strike does not only contribute structural damages, but also disruption of habits if not destruction -- since we are mandated to take that greasy dusty walk in contradiction to our usual dose of rusty-speedy muffler ride.

For sidecar drivers, this is the perfect moment! This scenario expresses the call of their duty. A human trail as it may be viewed. The former scenery of stranded and stagnant terminal line of pedicabs has now turned into a most sought-after, box-office transporter. Some people do have a choice to walk, but for differently-abled people, for those who cannot afford to see themselves walking with slum as the side scene, for girls’ refusal to have a blush of streets’ manifold particles, or basically a far destination – apparently, this is a big no-no. These simple reasons make us realize the urgency of that phenomenal blue-collar job. There’s nothing wrong with that, but excessive conditions and fines of drivers make that line of work abusive and disturbing if not impractical.

And for those who belong to the bunch of people who have no choice but to avail their service, you can involuntarily teach yourselves or learn the art of riding a sidecar, as an option for those times when streets cannot find their wheels and aren’t considered that busy!:)

C-O-N-N-I-V-E. Connive with flow!

  • Convince yourself that taking this ride is absolutely fun.
  • Observe and explore other things as sidecars pass through your surrounding -- whether or not those are slum areas, whether or not those are nice views. Make yourself believe as if riding one is actually taking a new path.
  • Never complain of the added factors inclusive of sidecars’ ride – pollution, etc. or else you should have taken that long and winding road! Less demanding customers are observed to be taken lesser pays and have reached their destinations safely.
  • Neglect unnecessary motions from the outside, especially the bad ones.
  • Increase your cheer to set good atmosphere. Since everyone is bad trip, make a difference, foster a stimulating feeling.
  • Value the times when riding sidecar, take that being a pleasure, not just an alternative conveyor.
  • Engage yourself with the driver, he may be abusive of fee, but he may decrease it depending upon the aura you project. (I’m not so sure if that’s regardless of your physical appearance) :)

Anyway, I find riding one amusing! (so as not to take worst craters of watery streets or else it’s regretful).

Now, let’s make sense out of these things.

For a too-far-to-walk destination, it would be wiser to ride these sidecars than to be exhausted and stressed. For the past few weeks, I have been dissatisfied, but then I learned how to be satisfied, and it’s good and fulfilling.

I realized that even simple things assume a certain degree of art, and I won’t elaborate further with that consecrated idea of art. It is the same way that I became profoundly conscious and familiar to that idea that, once you refuse to die, you don’t have the right to complain about life anymore.

Connive and have a sound happy trip!

How about with this kind of sidecar, want to go for a ride?

The Distress of Strike

You have one chance, one life, and what you do with it? It’s up to you.

The urban people have just suffered from another strike, less than a month from now. Without a doubt, it paralyzed the core of Manila at least for a light Tuesday.

Take a look at this newsreel:

  • Transport groups call off strike after Arroyo signed EO. Transport groups called off their Metro Manila-wide strike Tuesday noon after President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo issued an executive order calling for the suspension of local government laws on traffic ordinances.
  • The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority will call a meeting with Metro mayors and transport leaders on Monday in a final attempt to get them to agree to the single-ticketing scheme.
  • The militant group Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Operator Nationwide (Piston) is readying a series of protest actions to be led by its chapters in the provinces to denounce the latest increase in fuel prices.

If you are a white professional, I mean wearing white – dealing with strike is at any rate a great misfortune, more than a bad luck for you. And this may undeniably call for a bad morning and a bad trip as well. This is commensurately equal for students, who used to be the primary users of the road during weekdays, for the mothers who struggle to get in touch with the nearest market; finally, the same scenario goes with the inconvenient fate of office workers, employees and others.

But it is not the case for drivers; I see it not as a rest day but a day of sacrifice – subsistence lifestyle of drivers cannot drive them up to participate actively to that mass-based strike. It is a sacrifice as they give up the whole day pay (not to mention boundary compensation for non-owners) in turn of an uncertain reform they are campaigning -- not to account the families whose incomes are insufficient for a day-to-day life.

  • It seems that the Gospel accounts of the death of Jesus describe a standard Roman procedure for crucifixion. After the pronouncement of sentence, the condemned was required to carry the horizontal piece to the place of execution, always outside the city.
  • The victim's outstretched arms were affixed to the cross-bar by either nails or ropes. This was then raised and secured to the perpendicular pole (which in some areas may have been left in place permanently, both for convenience and as a warning). A small board or peg may have been provided as sort of a seat to bear some of the weight of the condemned (this actually may have prolonged suffering by prohibiting suffocation). The feet were then secured in a manner forcing the knees into a bent position. Contrary to popular contemporary opinion, crosses were not high; the feet were probably only a few inches above the ground. The sign describing the accusation was secured to the cross.
  • Death usually came slowly; it was not unusual for persons to survive for days on the cross. Exposure, disease, hunger, shock, and exhaustion were the usual immediate causes of death. Occasionally death was "mercifully" hastened by breaking the legs of the condemned. In Jesus' case death came much more swiftly than usual. A spear was thrust into his side to assure he was really dead before the body was removed (John 19:31-37). Bodies of the crucified were often left unburied and eaten by carnivorous birds and beasts, thus adding to the disgrace.

Simbang Palaspas. Simbang Pulitika.

Nagmamatiyag lamang.

Animations!

To cheer you up. :D

First stop is to look at the basic stuff in anyone's life. Have you received these text messages?
  • Pinapaikot mo lang ako. Nagsasawa na ko. Mabuti pang patayin mo na lang ako! -- electric fan
-- takore
  • Pag nagmamahal ako, maraming nagagalit. Wala na ba kong karapatang magmahal? -- gasolina ...and so much of these things!
After the hard days of work, I'm pretty sure that you find your self hanging on a pleasant mood demanding for a "complete rest". A day with no worries.

You somehow struggle for a happy atmosphere. You are able to hug your pillows whole heartedly. You can fix yourself without pressure.

You assume that your family has enlisted its plan for a provincial caravan. You expect something different for this season. All you want to do is to accomplish your exams/commitments and make it sure that requirements are finally done. And you'll soon realize that you can inhale and exhale better! --- which brings me to the idea of taking into account a unique way of activating communities, a peculiar way of detoxifying I guess...and, it's all about animations! Yes, you read it right!
Animation is the rapid display of a sequence of images of 2-D artwork or model positions in order to create an illusion of movement. Well according to Wiki, it can sometimes refer to a way of activating something.

Have you tried to animate your favorite toy? Why not try animating your fingers? Just like this...

...And how about something digital? Let's call this, The Attack of the Finger!:

"Aba! Ikaw na nga nakatapak, ikaw pa nagalit?" - tae.
That's it!:D

Don't feel any pressure, just check this out.

Jihadism vs. Mc World

Hmmm...for now, something serious!:)

Two weeks ago, I had the pleasure to formally open a poetry reading session that exhibited eleven different societal concepts (including persons, projects, isms, etc.). From there, the concepts of Jihadism and McWorld were presented.

“Still, democracy has always played itself out against the odds. And democracy remains both a form of coherence as binding as McWorld and a secular faith potentially as inspiriting as Jihad.”

There is an obvious mark between Jihad and McWorld that made these two perceptions contradicting – carrying a sort of political conflict. This conflict elevated the current matter to the new world application and classified it as blueprint hauling a kind of confusion.

Jihad merely pictures out not only the way Middle East community hold permanence in light of their self-fashioned political process but gives us a big picture of how other groups struggle to maintain the primitivism of their culture, the ethnic identity and the tribalism. On the other hand, McWorld offers us the proposed play of the new culture. There existed a degree of possibility for some countries to be revolutionized even in the small traces of cultures, at the same time, to try stitching them as one. McWorld gives rise to the postmodern concepts such as consumerism, globalization, homogeneity and capitalism which simply leave us words of promises. Basically, Jihad vs. McWorld caters the idea of realizing that the new world is actually in a state of odds between the projected engagement of contemporary rationality and the preservation of religious primitivism, which are both functional in the current world.

Critics assert that fast food chain restaurants such as McDonald's are critical towards many aspects of the native, home-grown cultures in countries where they have been introduced. Government in itself is a product of belief system that is knotted in its distinct cultural template. While political institutions are entrenched in the matrices. On the same line, political institutions embrace schemes that made them the enemies of the state. Having this encounter, institutions with their initiatives, search for an alternative belief system. It should have been anticipated that both actors catch up with each other.

Looking for enough reasons why this situation happened is reinforced by the constant increase of incidence involving radical religious movements such as the emergence of cults, individualistic groups and other religious organizations advocating for cultural refinement. But momentarily, political institutions cannot jive on the planned intrusions of McWorld creating a dilemma that bolstered other belief systems to be accustomed once and for all. Muslims and other groups experiencing separatism felt that they are dehumanized. The humanization in all fairness crafted both by the government and social forces is not enough to satisfy these political institutions to finally decide to live in virtue of McWorld’s newly-built lifestyle. Taking into account the function of government, the whole cultural logic is truly dependent on it.

Speaking to deep, there are at least two fates that may happen given this decisive situation. The first is for these political institutions to finally surrender and allow retribalization process to occur but of course, this statement is easier said than done. It can actually trigger humankind to war and bloodshed.

The second is being instinctive for us to let the onrush of economic and ecological forces that command incorporation and standardization of the world with all being “fast” – (fast music, fast computers, and fast food—with MTV, and McDonald's) urging nations to weave complex webs of arrangements into one commercially homogeneous association bombarded or tied together by technology, communication and other factors.

Professor J. Ponsaran (UP Manila) has pointed out that the country suffers "identity crisis", the same case (for us to practice our own culture, or just adapt Western stuff). The seemingly “magnetism” of the clashing ideas of tribalism and globalization continue to flourish, even here in the Philippines.

Greatest Fortune for Debts: Philippines

No progression if not made even worse: (in random)

-- Philippines’ culture of corruption (politicians and the likes. I won’t mention names)

-- Infested democratic state

-- Aling Pining (tinapa at kakanin vendor), Mang Kaloy (tagatulak ng troli sa riles), Aling Mameng (nagtitinda ng mami), Aling Siding (bet collector), Mang Jerry (minsan tumataya sa karera, namamasada din), Tikyo (taxi driver), Siko (ataul vendor), Leticia (manikyurista, foot spa, etc.), Lolit (labandera, namamalantsa), Cesar (plumber), Totoy at Neneng (students), at marami pang iba, Philippines - still in the condition of having social inequality; difficult access to scarce resources, the P 18.50/Kilo minimum price for rice, considered to be too expensive (this is the case if not understated).

-- Ka Roger (Ibaloy), Ka Oskar (Aeta), Aling Miding (Mangyan), national minorities, Philippines, continue to suffer dislocation, disparity, discrimination, militarism and others which make them more marginalized, suffers structural violence, political killings

--Lola Rosa and her grandchild Cecille (raped), Philippines, representing women violence

--Nina, domestic helper, representing Filipinas who decided to be separated from their families for greener pasture, however, they suffer more than discrimination, (1) race- as Asian, (2) issue of sex and gender.

--Alfredo, pusher and user (case of hopelessness, starvation) Sana hindi niya na idamay ang iba.

--Ces Tordesillas- Sanchez and Ted Carandang- Enriquez, journalists, suppressed by the police authorities for covering Mr. X laying a bet, some kind of a corruption

No Subject

While going down the stairs from a train, clusters of activists were invading almost that entire busy street. And being in the metropolitan area, busy area entails earsplitting noise coming from the engines, not to mention the blowing of horns. And mind you, it doesn’t end there; noise barrage from rally groups overwhelms everyone that shall pass through. On that note, that rally has successfully created a trembling voice and has called immediate attention before the public. For the Philippines, this kind of exercise is guaranteed by the fundamental laws of the land, being a democratic society.

While utilizing my leisure time, watching the top stories, I got to hear the negative news leads matched up with video feeds showing the police and the protesters playing their “warcraft”. This has shown no difference since Arroyo assumed her presidency.

Kailan kaya?

1. Villar, Manuel - ST - Sipag at Tiyaga.

5. Fernando, Bayani - Count me in, aniya. Ang MMDA Chairman.

6. Lacson, Panfilo - Dating PNP Chief. Pinaliit ang tiyan ng mga tiyaning pulis. Ngayon senador, may potensyal sa 2010.

7.

8.

9.

10.

Sabi nila sa buhay-aktibista, when you expose, you propose.

O, tapos?

Intoxication

"Drinking they say is the haven of the weak. We forge a persona that we only have the courage to show when we are drunk enough. We escape reality even if it would risk our health. But he told me this, the most honest individuals are those who drink to drown, because they lose their social mask.
No pretentions.
No limits.
No lies.
That's not weakness, that's being fearless and he assumed what they can never fathom bacause of intoxication, is that, we become pure."

Of course, you may agree or not.
Reactions are relative.

Yes, I agree that through drinking it is possible for a person to reveal the real him/her if that's the matter. However, I cannot agree that drinking is a form of bravery, rather, a manifestation of weakness. Is it really needed for a person to take this way, just to unveil what he/she really feels? But then, I agree that not all can explain themselves. How about other means? Is this the last if not the only resort? By drinking or being intoxicated we become pure, is this true? Well, for me it's a no- no.

This message has been in my inbox since February, and after receiving this, I felt that this statement may serve as a source that everyone can relate to.

What's instilled in my mind is that, vices are matters of choices and not of addiction.

Bet Collector*

“Invert a cone.
And it shall figuratively reveal the real situation of the Filipino society;
Where the base is home for the majority of the people
and the apex covers the influential few.”

We are so much winning our time towards individual dominion over material things that sometimes we tend to be flippant to look for simple things, to capture big pictures from small lives, and create inspirational stories out of it. We forgot to understand what life has to offer. A life to nourish; a life worth living for and a love to give! These few thoughts reflect the true picture of the present times where it seems all people's after for a gain.

A mere fact that until now, wealth means power. The affluent wealthy are those who rule the society, while the powerless includes the poor majority, to the poor whose game is much different to that of the middle class, whose fight is virtually diverse to wealthy people. This seemingly boundless idealism of stratification has been given enough justice in light of appropriate character delineation.

Aling Rosing and her hanap-buhay depict the situation of the society’s modern day living. Searching for a stable battleground, struggling for survival. She used to focus her shutter to the typical slinging dwellers practicing “jueteng” as a hard day work; a “kubrador,” who steals the righteous time to fill up the bare minds, to quench tremendous thirst and to make appetites starving no more.

This craft has restored the profound concept of poverty many of us do not know. We only see the finely tuned poverty as it manifests but merely do not give a solitary concern to where it is deeply rooted.
Kubrador’s game in a tale of time coincided to making a bet or simply a gamble. In the midst of survival, they are left with few choices to that extent they have to grasp on the sharp edges of such unlawful activity -- taking these tags of sufferings not a hindrance to individual progression but rather the only way to track on.

On the other hand, the perspectives laid in their stories are praiseworthy as they unfailingly delivered face-to-face framing of the household. I used to see Aling Rosing watching a noon time show that showcases a definite choice between the sure tangible win and the unseen promising surprise.
Just like what her story would like to impart, that life is a game of assurance and uncertainty. Aling Rosing taught me to ponder on the varying human philosophy in terms of religion. A woman kubrador plays a mortal character of using her religion as a guide in her attempt to take camouflage in the reality -- that “jueteng” is nothing but a prohibited livelihood. Her stand until the end had never changed and she continued to deal with life even in strongest, weakest and whimsical mode of her game. She illustrated a humanistic loom of trials, tests and learning.

Her story is a mirror of human behavior in the verge of poverty and of course taking the real scores behind the untold stories of her considered profession as bet collector.

Undecided Choices

My father has not been tired of asking me questions about my preferences in life. These includes my views, what I must watch, what are sensical, what are non-sensical, what are worth giving time and attention and what are irrelevant, what sports I should be inclined to, what I should do for a masculine cause and an intervention as to what outlook I should set in life. Sometimes, he gets to reject the choices; he called these simple pieces of decisions as well as habits as garbage.
It makes me think, of how he should have defined what real garbage is? Is it confining? I think so. Yet, I do not have this brave heart to express these things except in this light.
"We always have a choice". - from the movie Spiderman
And these choices shall determine perhaps what are the truths that one struggles to realize. We somehow give ways just to make these choices worth achieving and with doing so comes great adversities. Such trials make us function to our own feet. Such encounters make us tougher and we almost forgot the rules of what life has intended for us to do.
Until one day, we find ourselves looking at the rare misfortune that we cannot really imagine. We hate ourselves of doing nothing to make choices in reality. Then, frustration comes. Even we made fatigue-causing sacrifices, still barriers are in existence. It seemed that trials are really destined to intertwine in our lives and create an eminent stain forever. Yes, making choices is really easier said than done.
Along comes the story of a family, not so far from my residence. The choice of being brave, the choice of healthy living, the choice of preferences, the choice of being satisfied, the choice of being happy and the choice of choices. We have to consider different things to come up to a decision. Decisions are choices. And it’s up for a person on how to shape them up. We have our own principles, we our blessed with an individualistic mind. It is easy to find where one can reap the knowledge, the learnings and words that passed the standards soon enough that they are needed to be instilled. It is for us to decide which of these things are worthy to be considered and which of these are to be discarded – which of these things are garbage, as my father says. After all, who sets the moral? Ideals? What should me done? What is right or wrong?

When I was a kid not about five years of age, I did not know then what is the value of money. I ignored money. I did not know then what is the weight of that single untidy paper, the seemingly rough-and-smooth paper that lingers... especially to the bare hands of many people.
All I thought of money -- like a paper, consisting of scorned and beheaded people, that is used to buy things. Since the very reason that I did not know what is it all about, I put money in the trash unintentionally.

But, what I'm actually thinking of, are the persons in the money. As I grow, these thoughts are torturing many lives as I see it. And the practical idea I have thought prior to my seventeenth year becomes clear. And that childish thought is happening today. It is metaphoric that people tend to behead others at any rate to buy things that are irrelevant... things which they wanted, the lust that buys sin and hatred. To others, there is something so wrong that feels so right all along, I should call it chocolate-coated sin.

They said attitude can move mountain. I just can’t have this full comprehension to make things in their stable stature. They always make me jiggle, make me curious. Why people should wear fake faces? A face of money, a craving face for money. A face that will do everything for money sake. A face that characterizes mystique.
Is it really human nature for people to behave like this? Do we need to be different just to be in the realm of these green papers? Well, even single concerns require the best choices, as we choose what is best for our lives and loved ones.

Until, I realize that money is then the same garbage I been thinking before. I hope this needs not a cure for person devastated by its wheels.
Choices. Choices. Choices. Risk.
